Special Session

Special Session Introduction

Developing renewable energy vigorously is an inevitable choice for realizing low-carbon power systems. However, the randomness, intermittence and fluctuation of renewable energy, as well as its low inertia characteristics as power sources, have brought great challenges to the safe and reliable power supply. Power systems planning, as the top-level design, plays an important role in reducing carbon emissions. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce low-carbon oriented advanced techniques for power systems planning considering the characteristics of low-carbon power systems with an objective of realizing the goal of energy conservation and carbon emissions reductions.

Technical Outline of the Session

This special session focuses on a hot research topic: low-carbon power systems. At present, many countries all over the world have reached a broad consensus on carbon emission reduction policy, and China will peak its carbon emissions by 2030 and become 'carbon-neutral' by 2060. As an important tool to achieve the above-mentioned goals, the low-carbon power system has drawn significant attention from both academia and industry. In this sense, low-carbon oriented advanced techniques for power systems planning are strongly encouraged in this special session. By optimizing the size and location of power system equipments, carbon emissions can be reduced efficiently on the premise of ensuring the system safety. Topics of interest include (but are not limit to): generation expansion planning, transmission expansion planning, coordinated generation and transmission expansion planning, distribution expansion planning, energy storage systems planning, integrated energy system planning.
